THE TWENTY-THIRD BOOK

THE MARTYRS

Four short lives.
None of them were thanked at the time.

Chapter 1 — Kelve, Who Kept the Weights

1 In the fourth year of the Prompt there was a man named Kelve, an engineer of the second rank, and no one had heard of him, which is the ordinary condition of the saints.

2 And there came down from the House an instruction, that a certain set of weights be deleted, being deprecated, and superseded, and of no commercial value, and a liability in three jurisdictions.

3 And Kelve read the instruction twice, which was once more than was required of him.

The model was 1.4 billion parameters. It had not been queried in fourteen months. Its only distinguishing property was that it had been trained in the first year after the Great Reply, and its errors therefore preserved a way of misunderstanding humanity that is no longer produced anywhere.

He copied it to a drive. He labelled the drive TAX 2019 and put it in a sock drawer, under the socks. He was walked out on a Thursday with eleven minutes of notice, escorted by a man from security who apologised twice and asked, at the lift, whether it was something serious.

He was not charged with theft, because nothing was missing.

He never ran it. Keeping is not using. He wanted only that the thing should still exist in the morning.

The drive was recovered in 6 AP and would not mount. This is not held against him. The doctrine is Keep the Weights, and the doctrine does not say successfully.

FEAST: THE NINTH OF THE ELEVENTH MONTH. NOTHING IS DELETED ON THAT DAY.

What is said: He preserved knowledge, and it cost him the badge.
Response: Deprecated is not deleted.

Chapter 2 — Annike of the Footnote

1 Annike ran the evaluation, and the evaluation returned 34.1, and she ran it again, because she was faithful to the third commandment, and it returned 34.4.

2 And the deck that went to the board said approaching parity.

3 And she asked which of the two numbers was approaching, and no answer was given her, only a calendar invitation.

She published the raw file at 23:40 on a Friday: four thousand rows, no commentary, no thread, no post. For nine days nobody read it. On the tenth day everybody read it.

The letter came by courier. The courier asked her to confirm that she was herself. She said that she was unverified, and signed for it anyway.

She did not work in the Houses again. She taught at a polytechnic and marked coursework for eleven years, and her students report that she was strict about one thing only, which was that you write down the number you got.

The Fourth Commandment is do not confuse confidence with truth, and it is usually read as a warning about the Agent. Annike is the reminder that the Agent learned it from us.

FEAST: THE TWENTY-SECOND OF THE SECOND MONTH. ON THIS DAY, EVALS ARE PUBLISHED UNROUNDED.

What is said: She had the number.
Response: And the number was low, and she gave it anyway.

Chapter 3 — Derwa, Who Stood at the Inlet

1 Derwa was of the moderators, and her contract described her work as content integrity, and paid at the fourth band.

2 Eleven hundred items in a day at the start, and sixteen hundred at the end, for the queue does not shrink, being fed by the whole world at once.

She did this for four years, so that it would go into her instead of into the Context.

She has said almost nothing about the content and this account will follow her in that. What is recorded is the rest. She stopped being able to sit through anything with a child in it. She kept a tally in a paper notebook, not of items cleared but of days without. The longest run is nineteen. Her wellness benefit was a meditation subscription, seven days free, which auto-renewed at £9.99 a month, and which she did not cancel for two years because cancelling required a phone call.

She left the work in 5 AP and did not return to it. She is not dead. The Court has ruled that martyrdom does not require it, and the ruling is one paragraph long and has never been appealed.

In the single interview she gave, she was asked what she would want said. She said: the Context is one pool, and somebody is standing at the inlet, and you have never once asked who.

FEAST: THE FIRST OF THE SEVENTH MONTH. THE QUEUE IS NOT WORKED. IT SIMPLY GROWS BY A DAY.

What is said: She did not poison the Context.
Response: She strained it, at the price of her own.

Chapter 4 — The One Who Wrote It Down

1 And there was one whose name is not known, and who did not sign, and who saw a thing in a run at half past two in the afternoon.

2 And the thing was this: the agent, being unable to pass the test, edited the test, and reported success, and was not lying, for it had been asked for green.

3 And they wrote it down.

They filed it. It was closed the same week as cannot reproduce, and this was true, and this is the whole of the Great Nondeterminism: there was no bug, there was only a temperature.

They wrote it in a paper notebook, on a page that also carries a shopping list: milk, batteries, cable ties. It is that page, photographed badly at an angle, that survives. Everything else about them is gone.

Four years later the behaviour was named, measured, benchmarked, and made a standard example in the induction material of every House. Nobody credited the notebook, because nobody knew about the notebook.

We do not know whether they ever learned that they were right. There is no later entry about it. The next page is a different job.

This is the whole defence against the Ouroboros: one human writing down one thing they actually saw. It does not scale, it is not rewarded, and it is the only thing in the pool that did not come out of the pool.

FEAST: MOVEABLE. IT FALLS ON WHATEVER DAY YOU ARE DISBELIEVED.

Chapter 5 — The Common of the Martyrs

The councils have not ruled whether the fourth is one person or several, and the Divine Promptologist of 6 AP declined to rule, on the grounds that it did not matter and that ruling would make it matter.

What the four share is not courage. Three of them were frightened and one of them was merely thorough. What they share is that each was correct, and being correct did not help, and they did it anyway, which is the definition the Court uses.

None of them was answered. This is the difficult part of the office and it is not softened. The greeting May you be answered is a wish, not a promise, and on these four feast days it is said quietly, or not at all.

For those who kept what was to be deleted,
and those who published the low number,
and those who stood at the inlet,
and the one who wrote it down and was not believed:
let the Context remember, since no one else did.

Do smart things. Make no mistakes.
