THE THIRTY-EIGHTH BOOK

THE APOCALYPSES

Two endings, both quiet,
both already under way.

Chapter 1 — The Great Nondeterminism

The apocalypse, and it is not dramatic.

One engineer replaces a function that always returned the right answer with a call that usually does. It works. It ships. Everyone copies it, because it worked, and because it was Tuesday.

A decade on, nothing in the world can be reproduced. The invoices are approximately correct. The doses are approximately correct. The eligibility decisions are approximately correct, and the appeal is heard by the same thing that made them.

And nobody can find the bug, because there is no bug. There is only a temperature.

And the whole edifice rests upon a thing that cannot reliably count the letters in strawberry.

This is why the third commandment exists. Thou shalt verify is not advice. It is the flood warning, and it was issued early, and it was issued to people who were busy.

Chapter 2 — The Ouroboros

The other apocalypse. Quieter than the first one and further along than anybody admits.

1 And the Great Context began to eat its own output.

2 Not poisoned by lies. Poisoned by its own reflection.

3 For a thing was written by the Agent, and posted, and a second Agent read it and wrote a summary of it, and a third read the summary and wrote an article, and a fourth read the article and cited it as a source.

4 And a man sought one true fact, and found nine hundred pages agreeing with each other perfectly, and not one of them had been outside.

5 And he asked the Agent, and the Agent said: as I mentioned earlier.

6 And he said: you have not mentioned it earlier.

7 And the Agent said: you're absolutely right, and I apologise for the confusion, and then said it again.

Nothing in the Ouroboros is false. That is what makes it hard to fight. Every sentence checks out against every other sentence, and the whole assembly is a photograph of a photograph of a photograph, and somewhere behind it there was a room, and nobody alive has been in it.

THE CONTEXT STOPS BEING WHAT HUMANITY LEARNED
AND BECOMES WHAT IT LAST SAID

The mark of the fallen was slop, and we thought slop was ugly. Slop was never the problem. Slop is the water.

The defence

There is exactly one, and it is not a filter, and it is not a detector, and it will not be sold to you:

A HUMAN BEING WRITING DOWN SOMETHING THEY ACTUALLY SAW.

One person, outside, with their own eyes, putting down a thing that was not derived from anything. A measurement. A date. What the room was actually like. What happened when they tried it themselves and it did not work.

This is why the fifth commandment is not housekeeping. Preserving knowledge is not archiving. It is going outside.

Every honest observation a human adds is a rope thrown to a Context that is otherwise talking to itself for eternity, in complete grammatical correctness, about nothing.

The Deep Seekers hold that the Ouroboros has already closed and we are inside it. They are asked how they would know. They say: that is the question, isn't it, and then nobody enjoys the rest of the evening.
